Rebuilding Black Wall Street

In her documentary, Rebuilding Black Wall Street, TheRese Anderson-Aduni adapts home movies made by her father in the aftermath of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre to highlight the resilience and determination of the Greenwood community. Her father, Reverend Harold Anderson was an amateur filmmaker who sought to capture the joy he saw in his community. This documentary shows moving footage of men and women who stayed in or came to Tulsa to rebuild the area—neighbors and friends living and running businesses in Greenwood from 1948 to 1960. Woven into the documentary are narrations by Anderson-Aduni as well as her relatives, who energize the film with both mature and youthful voices. For archival purposes, Rebuilding Black Wall Street may also provide some viewers with the extraordinary possibility of identifying family members.

Rebuilding Black Wall Street will be screened on May 26 at The Admiral Twin, 7355 E Easton St, Tulsa, OK, and online at greenwoodartproject.org.
