Crystal Z. Campbell

SLICK

With their interactive project, SLICK, artist Crystal Campbell asks visitors to consider the collective memory of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre as well as Oklahoma’s long history of inequalities and injustices. Placed in public spaces throughout Tulsa and Oklahoma City, the book format of SLICK will morph into a public art project interrogating historical amnesia and the deliberate omission of the Massacre from public memory.

SLICK will feature artist notes and modified archival images and sources that tell the story of Oklahoma’s history of land grabs, racial intimidation, displacement, and gentrification. Through their reconstruction of Oklahoma and Tulsa history, Campbell challenges the forced silences of people of color and inserts alternative narratives into the public view.

SLICK will be on display at AHHA Tulsa, 101 E. Archer Street Tulsa, OK May 7 to July 25.
